Counting Sheep
When the clock struck four and I really couldn’t sleep
I remembered my old gran said try counting sheep.
If not sheep, try cows and if not cattle, bees
Do that for half an hour, you’ll be sound asleep with ease
Or do a dance out on the lawn, beneath the pagan moon
Then you’ll be bound to start to yawn and be asleep quite soon
Dig weeds in the garden, and tidy up the shed
If that doesn’t work, re-tile the roof instead
Place an apple pastry in a hedge beneath the stars
Line up all the garden gnomes to worship life on Mars
Build a standing circle of megalithic stones
Join a group of druids chanting ancient holy tones
If you’ve done all that and you still can’t sleep, she said
There really is no hope, you’ve got stars inside your head
